The International Alliance of stage, theater and cinema
employees, local section 262 was created in 1912 in Montreal.
We were at the time a union essentially regrouping the
cinema projectionists, which were at the time called “operators of machines
with animated views”. In 1994 we decided to undertake important unionization
organization campaigns. Cineplex Entertainment front of the house
employees then joined themselves to tour ranks and we were then able to
obtain a first collective agreement for 200 new members. Other cinema
employees joined us over the following years (Cinémas Beaubien, Tops Laval, Cavendish)
and we are pursuing our growth in order to improve the work conditions of
workers with precarious and part time jobs.
In 1999, office
workers joined our union for the first time in our history. The workers of
the APVQ (Association of Quebec Video Professionals) chose the
International Alliance to represent them. Unfortunately, they quit us when
APVQ merged with the AQTIS in 2005.
Our union has continued his
offensive and between 2003 and 2007, we have represented the professionals in the film
and video post-production at Vision Globale, second company in Quebec
in this sector. We have also negociated the first IATSE collective convention
in the cinema-tv sets construction sector with FADA. This confirms
our growing presence in the culture industry and our willingness to
diversify our presence in the arts and culture industry in Quebec.
